We are bringing back all the ’90’s nostalgia with this healthy Homemade Dunkaroos recipe! With just 4 simple ingredients, this version is secretly packed with protein, just as delicious, and doesn’t contain any artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives! Best part? It can be customized to fit your dietary needs (vegan, paleo, gluten-free!)

What are Dunkaroos?
For those who aren’t familiar, Dunkaroos were cute little packets of cookies and frosting. They came in one small package that had a compartment of little round cookies and another compartment of colorful vanilla rainbow frosting. And yes, they are still around – they were discontinued and then brought back in 2020.

This recipe couldn’t be easier to throw together and is super versatile. You can use store-bought cookies or graham crackers for dipping or make a homemade version! I have a homemade protein graham cracker recipe here that you can use! Love a nostalgic treat? Try my homemade Klondike Bars!

What makes this copycat dunkaroos recipe healthier?
Classic Dunkaroos are typically made with less than ideal ingredients – lots of artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, & preservatives – things that just shouldn’t be in our food. My version is only 4 ingredients and wayyyy more wholesome! Let’s take a peak at the ingredients comparison:
- Store-bought Dunkaroos: Vanilla Frosting with Rainbow Chips: Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Vegetable Oil (palm, palm kernel oil, hydrogenated palm oil), Corn Starch, Water, Nonfat Dry Milk, Salt, Monoglycerides, Polysorbate 60, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Soy Lecithin, Natural And Artificial Flavor, Color (yellow 5, red 40 lake, blue 2 lake, yellow 5 lake, yellow 6 lake, blue 1 lake, yellow 6), Citric Acid. Freshness preserved by Potassium Sorbate. Vanilla Cookies: Enriched Flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), Powdered Sugar, Palm Oil, Water, Whole Wheat Flour, Salt, Soy Lecithin, Monocalcium Phosphate, Baking Soda, Natural And Artificial Flavor.
- Dani’s Dunkaroos: Coconut or greek yogurt, coconut whipped topping, almond extract, protein powder (optional), and natural sprinkles.

Dunkaroos Ingredients
- Yogurt – be sure to use a THICK yogurt. Coconut yogurt is great for a diary-free/vegan version and greek yogurt is a great way to pack in some extra protein!
- Coconut whipped topping – So Delicious coconut whipped topping is my favorite! It’s minimal ingredients and nothing funky! You can use another form of cool whip if you’d like.
- Protein powder – vanilla is great, but you can feel free to have fun with the flavor here. I often use Macro Mike Birthday Cake or vanilla donut – so yummy! You can use my code “amb-dani” for a discount!
- Almond extract – this gives that classic Dunkaroo cake-like flavor!
- Natural sprinkles – look for sprinkles with no artificial colors or preservatives! I linked ones I purchase on Amazon but Whole Foods also has an inexpensive option!
- Optional sweetener – if you find the dip to not be sweet enough, you can add a dash of honey, maple syrup, or monk fruit drops!
For dipping:
- Homemade or store-bought cookies – you can totally make your own cookies for dipping, however sometimes I want this NOW and don’t have time to make anything. I LOVE using Simple Mills Sweet thins in a pinch! They have amazing ingredients. However, any cookie or graham cracker would be great!
steps
- In a bowl, combine all of the ingredients and mix or whisk well until no lumps remain. Taste & adjust as you’d like.
- Serve with your favorite cookies, graham crackers, or even fruit!
