Is homemade fudge healthy?

I love making homemade desserts because you get to control the ingredients! This fudge recipe is made using just two wholesome staples – yogurt and dark chocolate – both of which contain good-for-you nutrients like probiotics and antioxidants. Dark chocolate is surprisingly a great source of magnesium as well, so you can use that as an excuse to have this as a late night treat before bed – you’re welcome 😉

2 ingredient fudge without condensed milk

Most 2 ingredient fudge recipes call for an entire can of sweetened condensed milk. However, 1 can of sweetened condensed milk contains 180 grams of sugar alone! This isn’t including the sugar content from the chocolate. I am all about treating yourself to the real deal every now and then, but with my sweet tooth, I need a sweet treat that won’t spike my blood sugar on the daily! This is why I created a 2 ingredient fudge recipe without condensed milk!

Healthy fudge

Vegan fudge

This fudge recipe can easily be made vegan by using a thick dairy-free yogurt like coconut yogurt and vegan chocolate. It’s best to use a vegan greek-style yogurt as thicker yogurt works best for this recipe!

How To Make The Best Chocolate Fudge

The full recipe is in the recipe card at the bottom of the post! But here is an overview:

Kitchen Tools Required

No candy thermometer or oven is needed to make this fudge – it’s so simple!

  • Small loaf pan – keep in mind the larger the pan, the thinner your fudge will come out. The smaller your pan, the thicker the fudge will be! This is totally preference!
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spatula

Ingredients

Yogurt: It’s important to use thick yogurt for this recipe to create the creamiest fudge. Greek yogurt or coconut yogurt will work best! I consume a dairy-free diet so I use coconut yogurt to make this vegan fudge. I used Harmless Harvest Rich & Creamy yogurt for this, but I also love the brands CocoJune and Culina.

60% Dark or higher Chocolate: It’s important to use quality chocolate for this fudge recipe as it’s what gives the fudge all it’s flavor! It needs to be at least 60% dark chocolate as if it’s any less, the fudge won’t firm up as much as it is supposed to. If you want a sweeter fudge, you can try to sub 1/4 cup of the darker chocolate for milk chocolate, just keep in mind that it may turn out just a tad softer.

Step by step instructions

  • In a large bowl, add the yogurt. It’s important the yogurt isn’t SUPER cold, as it can seize the chocolate and create a crumbly texture. Either leave it out on the counter for a few minutes or pop it in the microwave for 15 seconds or so.
  • Line a small loaf pan or glass tupperware container with parchment paper and set aside.
  • Either using the double boiler method or microwave, melt the chocolate. Microwave – In a medium bowl, add the chocolate. Heat in 30 second increments, stirring well between each, until completely smooth.
  • Once the chocolate is smooth, pour it over the yogurt. Using a spatula, mix the two together well until uniform. You’ll want to work quickly as the mixture will harden as it cools.
  • Once it’s mixed together, quickly pour it into the pan. Place the pan in the freezer for a few hours until it has firmed up. Then cut into pieces. I like to sprinkle over flakey sea salt!
  • Store the fudge pieces in an air-tight container or freezer bag in the freezer for up to 2 months! This recipe is formulated to be kept in the freezer and they may become too soft if kept in the fridge!

FAQ’s & Expert tips

  • Prevent seizing – It’s important that your yogurt isn’t super cold and that the chocolate is hot when mixing the two together to prevent the mixture from seizing and becoming a crumbly mess! You can either leave the yogurt in the bowl on the counter for a few minutes or pop it in the microwave for 15 seconds or so. Be sure to add the chocolate to the yogurt immediately after melting it, as it needs to be hot!
  • What is the texture & taste like? This fudge is super creamy, smooth, & rich! It will definitely curb a sweet tooth without being overly sweet (it definitely isn’t super sweet like regular fudge where it can hurt your stomach!). It has a slightly tangy after-taste because of the yogurt that is delicious! It is made with darker chocolate, so it’s not as sweet as something made with milk chocolate. You could try substituting 1/2 cup milk chocolate chips for 1/2 cup of the darker chocolate, but the fudge may come out just a tad bit softer in texture.
  • Clean cuts – for cleaner cut pieces, trim the edges!

Healthy chocolate fudge flavors

  • Mint Chocolate Fudge: Add 1/4 tsp of pure peppermint extract!
  • Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge (Reese’s Fudge): swirl some into the top of the fudge.
  • Trail mix fudge: Fold in dried fruit and mixed chopped nuts!
  • Rocky Road Fudge: Stir some finely chopped almonds & mini marshmallows into the fudge before pouring into the pan.
  • Mocha Fudge: Add 1/2 tsp of instant coffee when mixing together the yogurt and chocolate.
  • Nutella hazelnut fudge: Stir in 1/4 cup hazelnut butter and/or 1/3 cup chopped hazelnuts. You can also just swirl in Nutella/hazelnut butter throughout the top of the fudge after you’ve pressed it into the pan! My healthy Nutella recipe would be great for this!
A bowl of Healthy fudge bars.

Storing healthy fudge bars

Store fudge in an air-tight container in the freezer for 2-3 months. This recipe is formulated to be stored in the freezer and may soften too much in the fridge.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Course Dessert, Snack
Cuisine American
Servings 14 small pieces

Ingredients

Fudge

  • 1 1/2 cups 60% dark or higher, chocolate (about 270g) *see notes
  • 3/4 cup THICK coconut yogurt or greek style yogurt (I like to use unsweetened vanilla) *Runny yogurts won't work! I used Harmless Harvest Rich & creamy. See notes.

Optional

  • pinch of sea salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • chopped nuts, dried fruit, etc!

Instructions

  • Note for making sweeter fudge: You can use a sweetened yogurt, but be sure the yogurt is still veryyyy thick for the best results! (It's still super yummy and sweet with unsweetened yogurt, though!)
  • In a large bowl, add the yogurt. It's important to note you want to work quickly once the chocolate is melted, as the mixture can seize and create a crumbly texture if the chocolate cools too much. Add the yogurt to a bowl and let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes until it's almost at room temp. If you yogurt isn't flavored, you can stir in a teaspoon of vanilla so that your fudge has some flavor.
You'll want to work quickly as the mixture will harden as it cools.
  • Once it's mixed together, quickly pour it into the pan.

Notes

*yogurt: full-fat yogurt seems to create the best texture fudge! Regardless, it is important to use a THICK coconut yogurt or greek yogurt! If the yogurt is runny, it won’t work and set up properly. Low fat yogurt will probably work if it’s greek-style and super thick!
*chocolate: It’s important that the chocolate is a somewhat darker chocolate (60% or higher) as milk chocolates don’t firm up correctly due to the milk content. Being it’s made with darker chocolate, it may not be as sweet as something made with milk chocolate. If you want something sweeter, you can try substituting 1/4 cup milk chocolate chips for 1/4 cup of the darker chocolate, but the fudge may come out just a tad bit softer in texture. Maybe try letting it freezer overnight or for a day or so to give it extra time to firm. Or you could also try adding a few drops of stevia or monk fruit.

my whole family was sitting around like how Is this two ingredients LOL. We loved it! We did substitute some of the chocolate with milk chocolate because it’s all we had and it did seem to be a bit soft so next time we’ll follow the recipe instructions and use darker chocolate! thank you!

    1. Hi Hannah! YAY! So happy the family loved it! I know, it sucks it doesn’t work with lighter chocolates – my boyfriend isn’t a dark chocolate fan, so I always feel bad he doesn’t love when I make this! I even tried to make it with Lily’s chocolate and it didn’t turn out super firm.. but i’ll keep playing with ratios and see what works!

Please give some kind of nutrition to 25 small piece’s of this Fudge. given if it’s coconut yogurt or Greek Yogurt. And I’m thinking of Using Vanilla Whole Greek yogurt, that sounds good . Thanks , more then you know . I’m a Full Liver Transplant Survivor, 4 yrs.post fighting off diabetes….

    1. Hi Lynn! The only reason I don’t give nutritional information is because different brands will vary GREATLY nutritionally/number-wise, as well as what type of chocolate/yogurt you use. I always recommend plugging the recipe into an app like my fitness pal with the exact brands you use for the most accurate nutritional information! Whole vanilla greek yogurt would work great! And you got this, keep fighting!!

    2. Hi. I was also wondering about the nutritional info. Calorie wise, 270 grams of chocolate can range from 1400 calories to 1600 calories depending on brand. 3/4 cup plain fat free Greek yogurt is 100 calories. If you use the lower calorie chocolate and fat free sugar free yogurt (not flavored, like vanilla), the entire recipe is 1500 calories. Divide by the number of servings. The recipe says 14 small pieces, so 107 cal per piece, but if you cut it into 25, it will be 60 . Since it’s only 2 ingredients, it will be easy to calculate nutrition based on the exact items you use and the number of pieces you cut.

      1. Hi Catherine! Yes, this is why I typically don’t include nutritionals because it really varies depending on the brands of products you use! I use Lily’s sugar-free chocolate so it keeps it a bit lower in calories/sugar!

Amazing! My son is allergic to dairy, and has been asking for fudge for months. No where have I been able to find dairy-free fudge. And then I saw your recipe!! Vegan greek yogurt and Kirkland chocolate chips, bit of flaked sea salt on top. My 18 year old son said it was the best fudge he had ever tasted, and came home saying he was dreaming all day about the last piece in the fridge. Haha. Presently making a second batch, this time with peppermint essential oil. He is VERY excited! This fudge is 10/10!!

ok so I was lazy and didn’t follow the notes the first time around and although it was delicious it didn’t come out thick and set up. So I made it again and followed the instructions and it was AMAZINGGGG!!!!!!! SO my advice, follow the instructions lol.

    1. Hi Tana! Haha, i’m so happy it ended up working out for you!! I’ve tried switching up the ingredients and it never works out – it’s a finicky one! Thanks so much for trying!

okay I didn’t know what to expect because I didn’t want them to taste like straight up yogurt, but wow they are SO good and melt in your mouth!

  8. Can I use semi-sweet chocolate chips for this recipe? I really want to try this but that’s the only chocolate I have right now.

    1. Hi Ashley! Do you know the percentage? For some reason darker chocolates are the only kind that really hep the fudge set up and become fudge-like, if that makes sense. I’ve tried with milk chocolate and it doesn’t get that same texture. It’d still be delicious, i’m sure! Just maybe not exactly how the recipe shows! (:
