Skip the store-bought stuff and make delicious, creamy, healthy Nutella at home with just a few
wholesome ingredients! This versatile spread is chocolatey, creamy, and tastes even better
than the real deal.
When I was younger, i’d smash a jar of Nutella, easy. I loved it on and in everything, from pancakes, bagels, and waffles, incorporated in desserts, and i’d even dip apple slices in it. What’s not to love about hazelnut and chocolate together? It’s literally a dream.
Unfortunately, store-bought Nutella is made with some questionable ingredients & super high in sugar, so I like to make it at home. It’s even more delicious and can be adjusted to your taste preferences. This healthier Nutella makes a much more wholesome option for kids and toddlers, too!

Why you’ll love this recipe
- This homemade Nutella is paleo-friendly, vegan, gluten and dairy-free, and refined sugar-free! It’s a much lower sugar option than the classic.
- Super simple to make. This Nutella comes together quickly and easily in a blender.
- Healthy ingredients – store bought Nutella contains some iffy ingredients that I don’t love to
consume on the daily. It’s also incredibly high in processed sugar. This version is made with
just a handful of wholesome ingredients and sweetened naturally with maple syrup or
honey. - Homemade Nutella is versatile and can be made in so many ways! Use it on toast, to dip
fruit in, swap it for peanut butter on a PB&J, add it to smoothies and shakes, coffees or ice
cream, or make my homemade Ferrero Rocher’s!

Is Nutella better made with cacao powder or chocolate?
You can make Nutella with cacao powder OR chocolate chips/bars. I prefer using the chocolate, but it’s just as delicious with cacao powder! I personally go back and forth with what I use, also depending on what I have on hand. There will be TWO versions you can make in the recipe card down below (at the bottom of the post!).
Equipment
- High powered blender: I recommend using a high-powdered blender with a tamper for the
best results. This makes I easiest, as you can use the tamper to tamp down the hazelnuts
into the blade. I have a Vitamix that I use daily and love! - Storage container
Ingredients to make homemade nutella
- Raw hazelnuts: I find them cheapest on Amazon!
- Cacao powder or chocolate chips: I like to use raw cacao powder for it’s antioxidant properties, but regular cacao powder also works! You can also use chocolate chips/chopped chocolate – there will be recipes for either option in the recipe card below!
cocoa powder will also work. - Sweetener: Coconut sugar or monk fruit work best!
- Pantry staples: Vanilla extract, sea salt
Steps
- Note: If you aren’t using hazelnuts with the skins removed, you’ll need to remove them yourself after roasting the nuts (it’s okay if there’s some skin, but you’ll want most of them off).
- Preheat oven to 350F. Lay the hazelnuts on a baking sheet and place in the oven to roast for 10 minutes.
- In a Vitamix or food processor add the nuts while they are still warm, blending/processing until you achieve a creamy consistency. You’ll need to scape the sides of the blender or food processor a few times – have patience! Depending on how strong your blender is, it may take awhile.
- Once the butter is super smooth and creamy, add in the remaining ingredients, blending until everything is well combined. Taste & adjust as you’d like (more sweetener, salt, vanilla, etc).
- Store the Nutella in an air-tight container at room-temp!
expert tips
- Be patient! The hazelnuts can take awhile to really blend down smoothly. It may seem like
they’ll never turn into a butter, but they will get there I promise! - Store Nutella in an air-tight container & stir before using. Some separation is natural!
How to use healthy homemade nutella
- Homemade Nutella can be used anywhere you’d use regular Nutella!
- On pancakes! Drizzle over your pancakes or waffles
- Spread it on toast.
- Top your favorite ice cream with it.
- Use it to dip apples or fruit in.
- Drizzle it over your yogurt bowls.
- Add it to your favorite shake or smoothie.
- Add 1/2 tbsp or so into your morning coffee.
