Love gummy bears or gummy candies but don’t love all the added sugar and weird ingredients? I’ve got you! What if I told you that you could enjoy gummy candy while also benefiting your gut health, hair, skin, and nails? Sounds too good to be true, right? It’s not! In this post i’ll share how easy it is to make homemade gummy candies at home with real fruit, organic ingredients, and no added refined sugar, artificial colors, flavors, or additives.

Collagen and gelatin have been getting a lot of hype in the beauty world the past few years, and for good reason. I love adding collagen to my coffee and baked goods but gelatin can seem a little more intimidating to work with.

Benefits of grass-fed Gelatin

Grass-fed gelatin has many benefits including:

  • Healthy, glowing skin: gelatin provides necessary proteins that improve your skin’s moisture & elasticity
  • Heals the intestinal track by coating and calming irritation and inflammation
  • Supports mobility through the promotion of healing in your connective tissues
  • Helps joint and cartilage health, as it contains supportive proteins
  • Improved bone health
  • Contains a wonderful amino acido profile
  • Helps repair the gut lining – the perfect recipe for anyone dealing with leaky gut, etc.

Not all gelatin is created equal – Why choose grass-fed vs Grain-fed

Grass-fed gelatin is partially hydrolyzed collagen extracted from grass-fed beef. To begin, the collagen is boiled at temperatures higher than 40 degrees Celsius, which breaks it down into smaller chains known as gelatin. After it is cooled, gelatin takes on a jelly-like form.

  • Grass-fed gelatin comes from grass-fed beef collagen.
  • Grain-fed gelatin is made from grain-fed beef collagen.

Grain-fed beef products are typically derived from antibiotic-pumped cattle, in poor living conditions. Grain-fed based diets are linked to bovine health issues, masses in the liver, and inflammation in the hooves, which will produce low-grade beef products.

Grass-fed based diets in cattle are synonymous with a better beef nutritional profile and has been found to contain higher amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, nutrients, and collagen. Simply put, you are what you eat!

How to make gut-health gummies

Equipment

  • Mold: The fun part about making homemade gummies is that you can make them in any sort of shape/mold. If you don’t want to purchase specialty molds, you can simply. use an 8×8 pan and cut them into squares after they’ve set. If you do want to make fun shapes, I love using these gummy bear molds and this individual square mold.
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon or dropper: I love using a little dropper for easier transferring of the gelatin mixture to the molds.

Ingredients

Full measurements and steps are in the recipe card at the bottom of the post!

  • Grass-fed gelatin: I use Further Food Gelatin, as it’s grass-fed pasture-raised. Be sure to use a grass-fed gelatin (more on this above!)
  • Fruit: We use real fruit to make these homemade gummies. Berries work the best, in my experience. I used an antioxidant blend of strawberries, blueberries, dark cherries, and pomegranates. NOTE: Pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that aids in digestion of proteins and will prevent your gummies from forming a shape. Kiwi, mango, and papaya can also cause some trouble with setting up. Fresh or frozen berries will work. If using frozen, let them thaw and drain the water/liquid, then use them.
  • Coconut water: You can also use regular water but coconut water offers many health benefits! It contains a rich electrolyte composition and offers many skin benefits including hydration, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, improving skin elasticity, fighting acne, & soothing sunburned skin. Look for an organic coconut water with no added sugar or other ingredients!
  • Sweetener: A touch of sweetener is added to the gummies to make them a bit sweeter. I like to use local honey for it’s nutritional benefits, but you can use maple syrup, agave, or even monk fruit for a sugar-free option.
  • Lemon juice: Lemon juice adds to the flavor of the gummies while also adding in some nutritional benefits!

Steps to make gut-health gummies

  • Add fruit, coconut water or water, sweetener, and lemon juice to a high powered blender. Blend until completely smooth, a few minutes or so. If you have large lumps that won’t break down in the blender or see lots of seeds, you can strain the mixture if you’d like.
  • Pour the mixture into a deep saucepan over low heat.
  • Once it’s warm, sprinkle the gelatin over top and use a whisk to whisk it in until no lumps remain. If you see random lumps that won’t break down, you can simpy remove them with a small spoon.
  • Pour the mixture into your pan or distribute it amongst the molds.
  • Let the mixture sit at room temperature for an hour and then transfer to the fridge for another hour until they are completely set up. Remove from the mold and store in an air-tight container.

Ingredients

Gummies made with whole berries

  • 2 heaping cups berries (i used an antioxidant blend from whole foods of blueberries, strawberries, dark cherries & pomegranates) *see notes for fruit that won’t work!
  • 1/2 cup coconut water or regular water
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 2-3 tsp honey, maple syrup, or monk fruit
  • 1/4 cup grass-fed gelatin *I used the brand Further Foods

Gummies made with fruit juice

  • 3/4 cup fruit juice (tart cherry, orange, etc)
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 2-3 tbsp maple syrup or honey
  • 3 tbsp grass-fed gelatin

vegan fruit gummies

  • 1 cup fruit juice (see blog post on fruits that won't work!)
  • 2-3 tsp agave or maple syrup
  • 1 1/2 tsp agar powder

Instructions

Gummies using whole berries

  • In a high powered blender, add the fruit, lemon juice, sweetener, optional collagen, and coconut water or regular water. Blend a few minutes until completely smooth. If you have lots of seeds or chunks that won't blend and you don't want them in your gummies, you can strain the mixture, but I didn't worry about this! You can taste it and adjust the sweetener as you'd like.
  • Pour the mixture into a large sauce pan and heat over low heat. Once it's warm, sprinkle over the gelatin and whisk it in for a few minutes until no lumps remain. If you find stubborn lumps that won't whisk in, simply remove the small chunks with a spoon.
  • Pour the mixture into a greased glass container to later cut into pieces OR distribute the mixture amongst whatever mold you use.
  • Let the mixture set at room temperature for an hour, then transfer to the fridge for 30 minutes-an hour before removing from the mold. If using a glass container, cut them into squares before trying to remove them with a spatula. If you go to remove them and they are sticking to the mold, let them stay in the fridge longer! Different fruits can set up differently.
  • Store in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Gummies will soften some (but still hold together) if left out at room temperature – this is how I prefer to eat them, but they are real fruit so store them in the fridge most of the time! I let them sit at room temp for a few minutes and then enjoy!

Gummies using fruit juice

  • In a small saucepan, heat the juices over medium heat until warm/hot, but not boiling.
  • Turn off the heat and whisk in the honey. Then, whisk in 1 tbsp of gelatin at a time, whisking until it's dissolved before adding the next. Stir the mixture until all of the gelatin is dissolved (this can take 5-10 mins sometimes!)
  • Transfer the liquid into your gummy molds. Refrigerate for 1-2 hours until firm (time varies depending on how large your gummies are!). Once firm, remove from the molds and enjoy! Store at room-temp or in the fridge!

Vegan gummies

  • In a small saucepan heat juice and maple syrup or agave over low-medium heat. Add in the agar powder and simmer over low-medium for 5 minutes, whisking continuously.
  • Let the mixture cool for 5 minutes. Then pour the mixture into your molds. Place in refrigerator for about 10 minutes until gummies have fully set.
  • Transfer the gummies to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator.

Mine came out with almost a jelly consistency (still firm though if that makes sense) and I actually liked them better than other gummies! Thank you for this!

    1. Aw yay, i’m happy you liked them! Unfortunately because theres no preservatives or commercial equipment to make the gummies exactly like store-bought, I love that these are the next best thing, texture wise!
