LIFE smoothie recipe

If you’ve spent any time in the wellness world, you’ve probably heard claims about foods that “fight inflammation.” But every now and then, a recipe comes along that’s actually been studied which is great for me, as i’m a nerd for the data and love to see the research to back up the claims!

This nutrient-packed smoothie was featured in a published study that examined whether drinking one specific smoothie (the LIFE smoothie) per day could impact markers of inflammation in as little as seven days. Researchers found that participants who added a daily LIFE smoothie to their usual diet experienced significant reductions in C-reactive protein (CRP), a commonly measured marker of systemic inflammation.

What Is the LIFE Smoothie?

The LIFE Smoothie was developed as part of the Low Inflammatory Foods Everyday (LIFE) Diet, an eating pattern centered around dark green leafy vegetables and other nutrient-dense whole foods.

In the study, participants either followed the full LIFE Diet or simply added one 32-ounce LIFE Smoothie to their regular diet each day for seven days. Researchers measured changes in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), a marker associated with systemic inflammation.

The smoothie itself contained:

  • Dark green leafy vegetables (spinach, baby kale, or baby bok choy)
  • Blueberries
  • Banana
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Ground flaxseed
  • Unsweetened plant milk

What Did the Study Find?

In this small study, participants who simply added one LIFE Smoothie daily experienced reductions in CRP levels after just seven days. Researchers also observed increases in blood beta-carotene levels, suggesting participants were successfully consuming more dark leafy greens. One interesting aspect of the study is that the smoothie group did not need to overhaul their entire diet. They simply added one smoothie daily to their existing eating pattern.

The researchers also theorized that blending the greens may improve absorption of certain plant compounds because the blending process helps break down plant cell walls. SO COOL.

Why is C-reactive protein so important?

Okay, let’s get nerdy for a sec;

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a protein made by your liver in response to inflammation. Think of it as one of the body’s “alarm signals.” When inflammation increases anywhere in the body—whether from an infection, injury, chronic disease, or other stressors—CRP levels in the blood often rise.

Why is CRP Important (and why you should test for it)

Essentially CRP is a marker of inflammation. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a protein produced by the liver that rises when inflammation is present in the body. While inflammation is a normal part of the immune response, chronically elevated levels have been linked to a variety of long-term health concerns. Because of this, researchers often use CRP as a marker when studying the effects of diet and lifestyle habits on overall health. CRP doesn’t tell you what is causing inflammation, but it can indicate that inflammation is present.

Being CRP is linked to long-term health, persistently elevated CRP levels have been associated with a higher risk of several chronic conditions, including:

  • Heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Obesity
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Certain cancers

This is why researchers are interested in lifestyle habits that may help lower CRP levels over time. Enter this study (and this delicious smoothie 😉

LIFE smoothie ingredients

Why These Ingredients May Support an Anti-Inflammatory Diet

  • Dark Green Leafy Vegetables: Spinach, kale, and bok choy are rich in carotenoids, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. These vegetables form the foundation of the LIFE Smoothie.
  • Blueberries: Blueberries are loaded with anthocyanins, the plant compounds responsible for their vibrant blue color. They’re one of the most antioxidant-rich fruits you can eat!
  • Banana: Banana adds natural sweetness and creaminess while helping balance the flavor of the greens.
  • Cacao Powder: Unsweetened cacao adds a rich chocolate flavor and contributes additional polyphenols.
  • Ground Flaxseed: Flaxseed provides fiber and plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, making the smoothie more satisfying.

In my version we are adding some extra fiber with chia seeds, healthy fats with cashew or almond butter, and a scoop of protein. This will make the smoothie even more satiating and blood sugar-balancing!

Steps to make a LIFE smoothie

  1. Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender.
  2. Blend until completely smooth and creamy.
  3. Taste and adjust consistency with additional water if desired. Enjoy immediately!

Tips for the Best anti-inflammatory Smoothie

  • Use Frozen Blueberries: Frozen blueberries create a thicker, creamier smoothie and help mask the flavor of the greens.
  • Start With Spinach: If you’re new to green smoothies, spinach has the mildest flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does This Smoothie Cure Inflammation alone? No. While the study found reductions in CRP after seven days, the smoothie should be viewed as part of an overall healthy dietary pattern rather than a cure or treatment.
  • Can I Add Protein Powder? Absolutely. Adding a scoop of vanilla protein powder can make the smoothie more filling while maintaining its delicious flavor.
  • Can I Use Kale Instead of Spinach? Yes. The study specifically used dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and bok choy.
  • Can I Make It Vegan? The original smoothie already uses plant-based ingredients and is naturally vegan.
