A cup of orange sorbet/sherbet.

Why you’ll love this easy orange sorbet recipe

  • Only takes a few minutes to make!
  • Made with healthy, simple ingredients.
  • Is vegan, paleo, and whole 30.
  • Can be made high protein by using greek yogurt.
  • Tastes like a creamsicle!
  • Makes a great substitute for ice cream!
  • The perfect refreshing dessert!

What’s the different between sorbet and sherbet?

Sorbet is typically made with just fruit and sugar. Sherbet is usually made with fruit and some sort of dairy, like milk. I’m calling this frozen dessert a hybrid of sorts as we are using fruit and adding in a little coconut yogurt (or greek yogurt if that’s your jam!). What is great about this recipe is it can be made with or without dairy.

What type of oranges work best for sorbet/sherbet?

This is personal preference, you can use whatever your favorite is. I love using ripe Naval Oranges, but Sumo Citrus has to be my favorite! I recommend using a sweeter variety! The sweetest oranges are:

  • Navel oranges
  • Cara Cara oranges
  • Valencia oranges
  • Honeybell oranges

How to make two ingredient orange sorbet/sherbet

Ingredients

  • Oranges: I like to use Sumo Citrus, but above are some great sweet orange varieties!
  • Coconut yogurt: You can also use greek yogurt. I highly recommend using a THICK yogurt. For coconut yogurt, I love the brands Culina and CocoJune.
a glass of two ingredient orange sorbet.

Equipment

  • Food processor: If you don’t have a vitamix, I recommend using a food processor as it won’t be as difficult (you won’t have to stop constantly to push the pieces into the bottom).
  • High powered blender: I highly recommend a Vitamix. I use this EVERY day. It has a tamper that makes blending things incredibly easy and helps eliminate having to use excess liquid which can cause a runny sorbet.

Steps

  • Peel the oranges and break them apart into smaller pieces. Place on a cookie sheet or in a bowl and place in the freezer overnight.
  • Add the coconut yogurt to an ice cube tray and freeze as well.
  • The next day, add the yogurt cubes and frozen oranges to a food processor or a vitamix. Blend, scraping down the sides often, until it’s completely smooth. It’ll seem like it won’t blend at first – give it time!
  • Enjoy straight away or store in an air-tight container in the freezer.

Variations & serving suggestions

  • Serve sorbet in an ice cream cone or waffle cone!
  • Top sorbet with sprinkles for extra fun!
  • Add in a scoop of vanilla protein powder to make it high protein and even more like a creamsicle!
  • Top with whipped cream or coconut whip!
  • Top with some chocolate chips or chocolate shaving or coconut flakes!

FAQ’s

  • Is two ingredient orange sorbet healthy? Yes! This makes a perfectly healthy dessert as there is no added sugar and is simply made with coconut yogurt and oranges.
  • Is there dairy in sorbet? There is typically dairy in sherbet, not sorbet. However, we add a little coconut yogurt (or greek yogurt) to our sorbet, so I like to call it a hybrid of both. However, this can be made completely dairy free!
  • Why is it called Sherbet? Sherbet comes from the persian word “sharbat”, which is a sweet beverage made with fruit!
  • How to make extra creamy sherbet: Add an extra 1/4 cup yogurt if you want to up the creaminest/richness!

Storing leftover orange sorbet/sherbet

I prefer eating this fresh, right after making (if using the first option in the recipe card). However, you can store it.

Store sorbet in an air-tight container in the freezer. Make sure you have a lid for your container or use saran wrap to tightly cover it. I love these reusable ice cream containers for this recipe! It’ll last a month or so in the freezer.

Be sure to let the sorbet thaw at room temp for 15-20 or so minutes before enjoying for the creamiest texture!

Ingredients

  • 3 Sumo citrus or other oranges – this doesn't have to be exact! *see notes for sweet varieties that I recommend!
  • 1/2 cup Coconut yogurt or greek yogurt *Use a thick variety. Up the yogurt to 3/4 cup if you want it extra creamy!
  • 2-3 tbsp orange zest
  • 1-2 tbsp maple syrup or honey *Totally optional! Just incase you want it a little sweeter.
  • 3 tbsp vanilla protein powder *Totally optional! You'd just blend it in with the other ingredients.

Instructions

  • NOTES: There are two ways you can make this recipe (i prefer the first way, and like it best eaten straight away but the video shows the second way). If you do not have a Vitamix, use a food processor. The vitamix has a tamper that makes it easy to push the pieces into the bottom of the blender if it's having trouble blending. If you dont have one, you'll have to constantly stop and stir it around. So opt for a food processor!
  • First option: Peel the oranges and break them into small pieces. Place on a cookie sheet or in a large bowl and place in the freezer overnight. Add the coconut yogurt to an ice cube tray and freeze overnight as well. When ready to make, add the oranges, orange zest, and yogurt cubes to a food process or vitamix. Blend a few minutes, until completely smooth. You may need to scrape down the sides a few times. It'll seem dry at first but it'll get smooth! Take your time!
  • Enjoy right away or Store in an air-tight container in the freezer. I have reusable ice cream containers that I love linked in the blog post! For the best texture, let the sorbet thaw 15-20 minutes before enjoying, to allow it to defrost a bit and get creamy!
  • Second option: Peel the oranges and break them into small pieces. Freeze the oranges for a few hours. Once they're pretty frozen, add to a blender with the yogurt and orange zest. Once smooth, pour the mixture into an air-tight container. Freeze overnight. When ready to eat, let it thaw for 15-20 minutes to allow it to defrost and get creamy.

Notes

*You’ll want to choose sweeter oranges as we don’t add sweetener. Naval oranges, cara cara oranges, and valencia oranges are all great!
**You can add a tbsp of maple syrup or honey if needed!
Tip: You can start with half of the oranges and half of the yogurt cubes, blend, then add the rest to make it easier on your food processor or blender.
