Ginger deserves all the hype – it is a flowering plant originating from China and is related to turmeric, cardamom, and galangal. For centuries, it has been used to treat nausea, indigestion, muscle soreness, and osteoarthritis symptoms, while also helping to combat infections, lower blood sugar, promote heart health, support weight management, boost immunity, and improve brain function!

Equipment

  • High-powered blender – I like to use my Vitamix mainly, but my Beast blender also worked great!
  • Individual glass jars or containers

Ingredients

  • Ginger – Ginger has a never-ending list of benefits (see “benefits of ginger” above!)
  • Turmeric – curcumin, which is the main ingredient of turmeric, supports the immune system thanks to it’s anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Coconut water – Packed with essential electrolytes and potassium, coconut water not only adds extra benefits to the shots, but a natural sweetness as well to help take away some of the bitterness from the ginger and turmerirc.
  • Orange – I like to use naval oranges or Depkon Sumo citrus!
  • Black pepper – Curcumin, the primary bioactive compound in turmeric, is poorly absorbed by the body on its own. Taking black pepper with turmeric significantly enhances the absorption and effectiveness of it! Essentially, when combined, black pepper and turmeric create a synergistic effect, amplifying their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Steps to make homemade ginger shots

  • Add the peeled and chopped ginger and turmeric, orange, pepper, and coconut water to a high powered blender, blending a few minutes until smooth.
  • You can pour the mixture through a strainer if your blender isn’t super strong, but I just leave it as-is! If your mixture is too thick or potent for your liking, try adding a little extra coconut water or filtered water, until your happy with the results (however, keep in mind – these are shots, so they are meant to be potent!)
  • Pour into individual containers and store in the fridge. I like taking these on an empty stomach before breakfast

Do you have to strain/filter the juice?

You can strain/filter the mixture through a nut milk bag or fine mesh strainer into a large bowl or pitcher prior to pouring into the shot glasses. Doing so will result in a thinner (think store-bought juice shot) consistency. If you don’t strain it, they will just be thicker, especially after refrigeration (But still does the job! You can also dilute them with a little water prior to taking!) If you didn’t peel your ginger or turmeric well, i’d recommend straining it to remove any skins that may have gotten left behind!

Expert tips & fAQ’s

  • Do ginger shots burn when you drink them? Because ginger shots are meant to be more potent than say, a juice, they are definitely going to be stronger in flavor. They do have a punch but that can also be diluted by adding a little extra coconut water or filtered water.
  • Use gloves – turmeric can stain your hands and anything it comes into contact with, so keep that in mind! I like to put a piece of parchment paper over my cutting board to avoid color stain!
  • How many ginger shots should you consume? A ginger shot a day is best – no need to go overboard!
  • Can you use ground ginger? Fresh ginger root is needed for this recipe, however if you want to use ground turmeric, that is fine!

Recipe variations

  • Add a dash of raw honey for sweetness and immune benefits.
  • Aloe vera juice is amazing for digestive health – try subbing 1/2 of the coconut water for pure, organic aloe vera juice.
  • Swap in pineapple for the oranges.
  • Add a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar for digestive health benefits.

I sent this to my parents and they loved the ginger shots. I have yet to try it but planning on making it today.

How many ounces are the shot containers you used?

    thank you!

  2. Hi! I cannot wait to make this! Purchased the glasses and waiting on delivery..
Question.. if substituting powder turmeric, how much should i use?

    1. Hi Michele! I’m so exited for you! You’ll have to let me know once you try! If you’re using powdered turmeric, i’d probably try using about 2 teaspoons. I’ve never used powdered before, but think that should suffice!

  3. I live in Springfield Missouri and have a hard time finding turmeric route. Is there anywhere I can order it from? Any ideas?

    1. Hi Heather! It really just depends on how large your shot glasses are! You can also store them in a large bottle and pour yourself shots if you dont have individual glasses! I usually do 3oz-6oz shots as I like a larger shot, but the ones you’d buy in store are 2oz. So it’s really up to you!

  4. Hello, This sounds great, can’t wait to try it. But, I understand the traditional shot that the Scandinavian’s drink in the morning is ginger & lemon. I also read how healthy the lemon juice is for good health. I am curious why your shot is with orange juice instead of lemon juice?
