Ingredients You’ll Need
Scroll down to the recipe card for the full measurements! This recipe sticks to wholesome, pantry-friendly ingredients:
- Ground beef or ground turkey: I usually reach for lean ground beef since it delivers that cozy, old-school sloppy joe flavor I love, but you can also use ground turkey!
- Yellow onion
- Bell pepper
- Minced garlic
- Tomato sauce
- Tomato paste
- Coconut aminos or liquid aminos: this is similar to soy sauce but healthier. It’s low in sodium and gluten free. However, you can use soy sauce if desired.
- Apple cider vinegar
- Spices: Smoked paprika, onion powder, salt, & pepper
For Serving (Choose Your Favorite)
- Roasted sweet potatoes or cubed, roasted sweet potato
- Baked sweet potato halves
- Fries (I love the brand Jesse & Ben’s!)
- Lettuce cups
- Cauliflower rice
How to Make sweet potato Sloppy Joes (Step-by-Step)
1. Brown the meat
Cook ground beef or turkey in a large skillet over medium heat until almost cooked through. Then add in the died veggies and garlic. Sauté until everything softens and becomes fragrant.

2. mix the sauce
Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, coconut aminos, apple cider vinegar, and spices. Stir until the mixture is well combined.
3. Simmer
Pour the sauce mixture over the meat and veggies and give everything a good mix. Let the sloppy joe mixture cook for 10 minutes or so, over medium heat, allowing the sauce to thicken a bit.
5. Serve over sweet potatoes, etc.
Spoon generously over roasted sweet potatoes or sweet potato rounds. Garnish with fresh herbs (I love parsley and green onions!)
Tips for the Best Paleo & Whole30 Sloppy Joes
- Chopping shortcut: Use a veggie chopper to save time & effort!
- Add chopped carrots or zucchini if you want more hidden veggies.
- Double the batch—these sloppy joes freeze beautifully.

sloppy joe recipe variations

2. Turkey or Chicken Sloppy Joes
Use leaner meat for a lighter but still hearty version.
3. Spicy Sloppy Joes
Add hot sauce or crushed red pepper for heat.
4. Kid-Friendly Version
Skip the vinegar and paprika and cut back on spices for a milder flavor.
5. Veggie packed sloppy Joes
Add cooked lentils, chopped arugula, zucchini, or serve over cauliflower rice for a veggie-packed, high fiber meal!
What Makes These Sloppy Joes “Healthy”?
Traditional sloppy joes rely on sweetened ketchup, lots of added sugar, Worcestershire sauce, etc. This recipe switches all of that for more nourishing substitutions that still produce incredible flavor
- Tomato sauce + paste replaces bottled high fructose sweetened ketchup
- Sweet potatoes replace buns for more fiber + nutrients
- Veggies built into the sauce boost nutrition and volume
- Minimal processed ingredients keep it Whole30 and paleo
- Reduced sugar, lower sodium, no artificial flavors, sweeteners, or preservatives
Meal Prep & Storage
- Fridge: Store sloppy joe mixture for up to 4–5 days.
- Freezer: Freeze for up to 3 months in airtight containers.
- Reheat: Warm in a skillet or microwave. Add a splash of water if needed.
- Sweet potatoes: Roast ahead and store separately for grab-and-go meals.

- 1/2 tbsp oil
- good pinch of sea salt & pepper
Sauce
- 1 15oz can tomato sauce
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 2 tbsp coconut aminos or liquid aminos
- 3 tbsp maple syrup or monk fruit, to taste
- 1 tsp dijon mustard
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
Baked potatoes
- sweet potatoes or russet potatoes

Instructions
Baked sweet potatoes
- Preheat the oven to 425°F and place the potatoes on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Use a fork to poke holes into the sweet potatoes. Roast for 40 to 50 minutes or until soft inside when pierced with a fork. Optional: brush the potatoes with oil prior to baking for a more caramelized outcome.
Sloppy joes
- Add the oil to a large pan over medium heat. Crumble in the meat, salt, and pepper. Cook until almost all of the pink is gone. Then add in the garlic, onions, and peppers.
- Cook a few minutes until the veggies have softened, 5 minutes.
- While the meat and veggies are cooking, whisk together all of the sauce ingredients in a bowl.
- Pour the sauce into the meat mixture, stirring well. Cooking over medium heat, it should begin to bubble. Once bubbling, reduce the heat slightly and cook for 10 minutes or so.
- Serve over baked sweet potatoes with a sprinkle of fresh parsley!
